Market crash in numbers: Investors lose Rs 14 lakh crore; stocks hitting 52-week lows, lower circuits and more

In the afternoon session, Sensex plummeted 1109 points to 72,558 due to a sell-off in the small- and mid-cap categories. Nifty also fell 422 points to 21,913 points on Wednesday, losing ground on its early trade gains and indicating a lackluster mood among Dalal Street investors.

Here is a numerical analysis of today’s market crash:

Investors lose 14 lakh crore

In comparison to the value of Rs 385.64 lakh crore reported in the previous session, investor wealth decreased by Rs 14 lakh crore to Rs 371.69 lakh crore. Leading the losses on the Sensex were stocks like PowerGrid, NTPC, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, Titan Company, and Tata Motors.

223 stocks hit 52-week lows on BSE

Today, 223 stocks reached their 52-week lows. However, just 89 equities on the BSE reached their 52-week highs.

Market breadth in red

Just 351 equities out of 3,926 stocks were trading higher. Approximately 3526 stocks were down while 66 stocks were steady.

Oil and gas, metals, consumer durables and capital goods shares top losers

On the BSE today, all 19 sectoral indexes were trading lower. The top losers on Dalal Street today were shares of capital durables, consumer products, metals, and oil and gas. The BSE indexes for metals, capital goods, consumer durables, and oil and gas all plummeted by 1209 points, 1440 points, 1639 points, and 1913 points, respectively. In addition, the BSE auto index dropped 1108 points to 46,839.

Lower circuits, Upper circuits

During the midday trading session, the stock market crashed, with almost 1013 stocks hitting their lowest circuits. Conversely, 125 shares broke beyond their upper circuit boundaries, bucking the bearish trend on the BSE.

Midcap, smallcap indices tumble

The BSE midcap index fell 1602 points to 37,635, indicating a decline in the overall market. Small-cap equities on the BSE were destroyed, with the index falling 2079 points to 40,752 levels.

FII-DII data

According to preliminary NSE statistics, foreign institutional buyers purchased shares worth Rs 73.12 crore on a net basis on Tuesday, while domestic buyers purchased shares for Rs 2358.18 crore.
